About Skoterleden
Skoterleden is a free app and website that shows snowmobile trails across Sweden — plus official trails in Norway and Finland. The map is built on data from OpenStreetMap and supplemented with GPS recordings by users like you.
The idea behind the app is to make it easy to find and follow snowmobile trails wherever you are. You can see trails on the map, follow your position in real time, record new trails, save private trails and POIs, and download maps for offline use.
The app is available as a web app at skoterleden.se and as a native app for both Android (Google Play) and iPhone (App Store).
The map
The map is the heart of the app. When you open Skoterleden you see an interactive map with all registered snowmobile trails marked.
GPS and position tracking
Tap the GPS button in the right-hand panel to show your position. The button has three modes:
- "Av" (Off, gray) — your position is not shown
- "Spårning" (Tracking, blue) — the map shows where you are with an accuracy circle
- "Kompassläge" (Compass mode, yellow) — the map rotates to match your heading
Below the GPS button you'll see the accuracy (e.g. ±5m). Green = good, yellow = ok, red = poor GPS signal.
Search for a place
Tap the search icon to look for a town or address. Type a name and pick from the results. The map flies to the selected location.
Map layers and settings
Via the "Lager" (Layers) button you can:
- Switch between different base maps
- Show/hide snowmobile trails from OpenStreetMap (orange)
- Show/hide "our trails" — recorded by users (blue)
- Show/hide Norwegian trails (purple) and Finnish trails (teal)
- Show/hide my private trails (purple) and my private POIs
- Turn service points on/off (shelters, fuel, toilets, rest areas, cabins)
- Open "Mina data…" (My data) to list, edit and export your private trails and POIs
- Add a new private POI on the map
- Switch between light and dark theme
- Refresh trail data manually
Service points (POI)
Turn on service points in the layers panel to see shelters, fuel stations, toilets, rest areas and cabins near snowmobile trails. The points appear only once you've zoomed in far enough and are filtered so only those near a trail are shown.
Tap a trail
Tap a trail to see its name and information. From here you can report an incorrect trail or, if you recorded it, rename it or delete it.
Measure distance
Use the measuring tool (the "Mät" / Measure button) to measure distance as the crow flies on the map. Tap to place points — the distance is shown in real time.
Trails in Norway & Finland
In addition to the Swedish trails, the map also shows official snowmobile trails in Norway and Finland. They come from the authorities' open data (not user recordings) and appear as their own color layers that you can toggle on and off under "Lager" (Layers) on the map.
Norway (purple)
Data from Miljødirektoratet. Norwegian trails are often season- and time-restricted, so the color shows the status: purple = open season, gray = out of season, red = temporarily closed. Tap a trail for season, speed limit and a link to the regulations.
Finland (teal)
Data from LIPAS (Jyväskylä university). A solid line = official trail that is free to ride. A dashed line = a route (ura) that usually requires a permit, e.g. from Metsähallitus.
Always check local rules
Norwegian and Finnish trails can be closed for the season or require a permit, and authority data may differ from reality. Always check the current status and local rules before heading out.

Recording a trail
Recording means you ride along a snowmobile trail while the app records your GPS position. The recording creates a track that becomes a trail on the map — visible to all users.
What's required?
- An account (free to create)
- GPS access with "precise location" enabled
- GPS accuracy better than 35 meters (mobile) or 45 meters (web) to start
- Being on or near the trail you want to record
Step by step
- Tap "Mät in led" (Record trail) — the big red button in the right-hand panel.
- Choose "Publik led" (Public trail) or "Privat led" (Private trail). Public trails contribute to the snowmobile-trail map that everyone sees. Private trails are visible only to you — great for paths to fishing spots, your own snowmobile tracks, cabin roads and so on.
- Tap "Starta inspelning" (Start recording).
- Ride along the trail. The app records GPS points automatically. You'll see an info box at the bottom left showing:
- Recording time
- Distance ridden
- Number of points recorded
- Current GPS accuracy
- The app automatically filters out GPS noise — you don't have to worry about short stops or bad points.
- When you reach the end, tap "Stoppa" (Stop, red button) or "Avsluta inspelning" (Finish recording) in the info box.
- A dialog shows distance, time and number of points. For private trails you can also set a name, category (snowmobile/hiking/cycling/fishing/other), color and note. Choose "Spara" (Save) or "Kasta" (Discard).
- For public trails the app verifies the save. If everything went well you'll see "Sparat och klart" (Saved and done). Private trails appear as a purple line on the map right away.
Tips
- Keep a steady speed — the app works best while moving.
- Avoid long stops in the same place (can create point clusters).
- On Android, GPS runs in the background via a dedicated service, so you can lock the screen.
- If you lose connectivity the track is saved locally and can be synced later.
My private trails & POIs
Skoterleden isn't just for snowmobile trails. You can record private trails that only you can see — the path up the mountain, the road to the fishing spot, your own marked tracks — and drop private POIs like mushroom spots, fishing-net locations, or where you hid the key to the cabin.
Recording a private trail
Start recording as usual, but choose "Privat led" (Private trail) in the start dialog before you begin. When you save, you set a name, category (snowmobile, hiking, cycling, fishing or other), color and an optional note.
Adding a private POI
- Open the "Lager" (Layers) panel.
- Tap "Lägg till privat POI" (Add private POI).
- Drag the map so the crosshair sits on the right spot and tap "Bekräfta plats" (Confirm location).
- Choose a category (mushroom, fishing, key, hunting, campsite, water, other), enter an optional name, color and note. Save.
The My data panel
Via the Layers panel → "Mina data…" (My data), a panel opens with two tabs:
- "Leder" (Trails) — all your private trails sorted by date. Tap a row to focus the map on the trail, the pencil to edit the metadata, or the trash can to delete.
- "POI:er" (POIs) — all your private POIs with a category icon. Same edit/delete functions.
- "Exportera alla mina data" (Export all my data) — downloads a GPX file with your trails (opens in Garmin, Komoot, Gaia GPS and others) and a GeoJSON file with your POIs (opens in QGIS or any map app). Perfect as a backup or when switching devices.
Offline maps
You can download the entire map for an area to your phone before heading out where there's no mobile coverage. The map then works fully offline — including snowmobile trails, service points and your private data.
Download an area
- Open the "Offline" button under "Mer" (More) in the dock panel.
- Choose one of the preset regions (Jämtland, Härjedalen, Dalafjällen, Norra/Södra Lappland, Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Norra Mellansverige) — or draw your own area by tapping "Rita eget område" (Draw custom area).
- Preview the area and its size. Tap "Ladda ner" (Download).
- The download runs in the background. You can close the panel, use the map as usual and follow the progress via the badge at the bottom left.
Manage downloaded regions
- Give a region your own name by tapping the pencil.
- Update an old region via the refresh button — new map data is downloaded.
- Delete a region when you no longer need it.
Group trips
With group trips you can see where your fellow riders are in real time on the map. Perfect for keeping track of the party during a trip.
What's required?
- An account (free)
- GPS enabled
- An internet connection (mobile data works)
Create a group
- Tap the "Grupp" button (Group) in the right-hand panel.
- Choose your display name (the one others in the group see).
- Tap "Skapa grupp" (Create group).
- You get a 6-digit code and a QR code.
- Share the code or QR code with your friends. You can also tap "Dela länk" (Share link) to send a link directly.
Join a group
- Enter the code — tap "Gå med i grupp" (Join group), type the 6-digit code and tap "Gå med" (Join).
- Scan the QR code — tap "Skanna QR-kod" (Scan QR code) and point the camera at the code.
- Open a shared link — click the link and the app opens and connects automatically.
During the group trip
- Everyone in the group appears as color-coded markers on the map.
- Positions update every 2 seconds.
- Tap a fellow rider in the list to fly to their position.
- Online/offline status is shown — if someone hasn't sent a position for 30 seconds they're marked as offline.
- The group is valid for 8 hours and is then cleared automatically.
Emergency alarm
An active group trip includes an emergency alarm button. If you need help:
- Tap the alarm button (red).
- Confirm by tapping again.
- Everyone in the group gets a notification with sound and vibration — even if the app is in the background (via push notification).
- They can tap "Visa på kartan" (Show on the map) to see where you are.
Reporting
You can report problems directly in the app. There are three types of report:
Report a hazard/warning
Tap the "Varna" button (Warn — a triangle with an exclamation mark) and choose a category:
- "Isvak" (Open water hole) — open water or a hole in the ice
- "Svag is" (Weak ice) — unsafe ice
- "Sten" (Rock) — rocks or obstacles on the trail
- "Dålig led" (Bad trail) — the trail is in poor condition
- "Hinder" (Obstacle) — trees, fences or other things in the way
- "Övrigt" (Other) — describe the hazard in free text
Choose how long the warning should last (24 hours, 1 week, 1 month or permanent). The warning appears as an icon on the map for all users.
Report an incorrect trail
Tap a trail on the map and choose the flag icon. Write a short description of the problem, e.g. "The trail no longer exists" or "Incorrect routing". An administrator reviews the report.
Report a service point
Tap a service point (shelter, fuel, etc.) and choose report. Describe the problem, e.g. that it doesn't exist, is in the wrong place or has the wrong category. Requires being logged in.
Account and profile
Create an account
Tap the account icon in the right-hand panel and choose "Logga in" (Log in). You can register with email and password, or log in with Google or Apple (on iOS and web).
Notification settings
Under "Min sida" (My page) you can choose which push notifications you want to receive — club news, events, membership and warnings. We limit notifications to a maximum of six per day per user so the flow stays reasonable. Push notifications work on both Android and iOS.
My page
Under "Min sida" (My page) you see your statistics and all your recordings:
- Number of recordings
- Total distance measured (km)
- Number of trails you've contributed to
- Total recording time
- Average GPS accuracy
- Latest recording
You can expand each recording to see details — which trails it contributed to, distance, number of segments and whether it was a new baseline or an improvement of an existing trail.
Delete a recording
Go to "Min sida" (My page), find the recording in the list, expand it and tap the trash can. You can delete individual segments or the entire recording. A confirmation dialog appears before deletion.
Unsynced recordings
If you recorded offline, unsynced recordings appear at the top of "Min sida" (My page). Tap "Synka nu" (Sync now) to upload them when you have internet.
Delete account
Send an email to info@skoterleden.se requesting that your account be deleted, and we'll remove the account and its associated data.
Club page — for snowmobile clubs
The club page is an all-in-one tool for snowmobile clubs to administer trail operations, members and communication — right inside Skoterleden.
What's included in a club page?
- Your own public page with club info, trails, contact details and a link to Swish.
- Verified trails — mark your trails as officially verified so riders can see the information is up to date.
- Digital membership cards and payment via Swish — members buy directly in the app.
- Events that appear on the club page and can be announced to members and followers.
- Messages & push notifications to members — e.g. when a trail closes, an event is moved or the snow conditions change.
- Officer roles — invite several people in the club to help run things.
- Notifications about new recordings in your area so you can quickly quality-check new data.
How do we get started?
- Create an account in the app (if someone on the board doesn't already have one).
- Go to Ansök om klubbkonto (Apply for a club account) and fill in the club's details.
- We review the application and activate the club page, usually within a few days.
- Invite officers, add trails, events and Swish details — and then you're up and running.
The club page is currently in pilot and free of charge for clubs that want to be part of it early. Get in touch at info@skoterleden.se if you have any questions.
